Life's Lessons

Life's Lessons
through the eyes of a child....

It occurred to me as I was "baby" sitting my four year old grandson yesterday, that I should put in writing some of the simple thoughts and truths that he shares with me.  I love the series of books "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff" written by Richard Carlson, Ph.D. and Kristine Carlson.  My grandson taught me today not to ignore the small stuff but embrace it with love.  While we shouldn't let the small stuff in life drag us down, we must also pay attention to the little things around us.

It was a rainy, overcast, and dreary day outside as Levi and I played indoor games.  He started early in the morning asking if it was going to rain all day or if the sun would come out so we could walk up to the big playground.  Around lunch time, the rain stopped and Levi says, "I have a great idea", "we can take a towel to the playground and I can sit on the towel and ride the slides to dry them off".  That was a great idea for a four year old so that is what we did.

As he sat in the child's swing and I pushed higher and higher, I couldn't help notice the joy on his face.  Although it was still overcast with the eminent threat of rain at any time, he shouts "Isn't this a BEAUTIFUL day, Nan?".  Of course, I agreed that it was a beautiful day.  "I wonder who planted these pretty yellow flowers", he asks.  When I questioned the pretty yellow flowers he saw, he pointed to some weeds in the muddy playground area that had obviously been sprayed with weed killer and turned yellow.

Today I learned that the sun doesn't have to be shining to make for a BEAUTIFUL day and depending on how you look at things, yellow weeds CAN look like pretty flowers.

"TODAY is the day the Lord hath made, let us REJOICE and be glad in it!" Psalms 118:24
